Breaking up hurts. We like to think that we can process that in a civilized way, that we can somehow develop the breakup gradually and with minimum damage. There is no such thing, but at least the effort we invest in doing this helps us sleep better at night. And then we lie, because we know the breakup will follow. We lie because we don't want the breakup to follow. We lie about the breakup itself. We lie about the breakup after the breakup actually took place. We choose the version of the story that makes us feel best about ourselves and we repeat it so many times that it becomes our truth."
